Studies
of Rock Types
The information packets you can reach through the links on this page are Flash movies. To view them, your web-browser must have the latest Flash movie player. The player is free and can be obtained from the Adobe Web Site by clicking the icon:
You need to look at rocks to master volcanic petrology. In a traditional petrology course, you would spend hours in the lab looking at hand samples and thin sections. In some courses, maps and references to journal articles about the rocks being studied are also provided. The grain sizes of volcanic rocks precludes extracting much information in hand specimen; microscope study of thin sections is required. This electronic text substitutes photomicrographs for thin sections.
The Flash movies often play very slowly. If you find the download times too long, you can download all the material for an exercise in a zip-file. From the zip-file you can then extract the movie to run on your computer instead of the server. To do this, right-click on the desired link to the exe file on the left
and save the target to your computer. Double-click on the self-extracting exe file and save the extracted file to a location of your choice on your computer. We recommend a separate directory. Inside the extracted file find a file labeled index.html. Open this file in your favorite browser to play the movie. |
