Melt
Program
The Melt Program contains routines that help characterize volcanic rocks and
also that calculate parameters needed to apply names based
on chemical properties. This program calculates Thompson space
components, names based on the Irvine and Barragar, and IUGS-Total
Alkali versus Silica classifications, CIPW norms, and melt
properties. The routines in the Melt
Program will be needed to do the assignments
associated with the first part of the Theory and Analysis
section of the course.

Procedures
If
you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Communicator, then versions of
the programs that run under Windows can be downloaded clicking
here: MeltProg.exe.
There are no versions that run on a Macintosh. MeltProg.exe
is a self-extracting file. All you have to do is run the file
after downloading. After downloading the self-extracting file,
move it to the directory where you want to keep the Melt program.
Then run MeltProg.exe. When the extraction is finished you
should have three files in the directory: MELT2000.exe, the
Melt Program; a help-file: MELTHELP.HLP; and a data file:
RKS2000.rks.
Instructions
on how to use the routines and the Melt
Program will be given in the tutorials.
