Devils Tower, Wyoming, is the erosional remnant of a shallow phonolite intrusion. The columns forming the tower resulted from cooling against the country rock. The columnar joints produced columns approximately 1.5-2 m in diameter. The columns are near vertical at the top of the tower and close to horizontal at the base.
