| Highway Flow, a trachyte
that formed during the last eruptive period at Craters of
the Moon lava field is shown in this photograph. The rock
is felsic and contains approximately 60% silica. The lava
flow has phenocrysts of flourapatite, indicating significant
concentrations of HF. The latter constituent may have lowered
the viscosity below that expected for silica rich lava flows. |
